More than 700 people have been killed and 2,800 others injured in fierce fighting in Goma(DRC)since Sunday, while M23 rebels control the capital of North Kivu state.
UN reports indicate that the rebels are now moving towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, raising fears of further war.
The DRC government accuses Rwanda of supporting the rebels with the aim of instigating regime change, a claim that Rwanda has denied.
The DRC army has set up defenses between Goma and Bukavu to prevent further attacks, while citizens are volunteering to defend their city.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has pledged to continue to help the DRC protect its independence, sending peacekeeping troops.
16 soldiers from southern African countries have been killed in the fight with the M23 rebels.
