The deputy chairman of the Council of Governors in the country, who is also the governor of Nyeri County, Mutahi Kahiga, has asked the central government to reduce the number of companies authorized to manufacture alcoholic beverages in the country, in order to assist the efforts of the county governments, to combat illegal alcohol consumption.
According to Kahiga, there has been an increase in the number of companies that sell alcohol, despite not being approved by the product quality control board KEBS.
Governor Kahiga also said that reducing the number of these companies will help a lot in dealing with the issue of young people, health problems and even some losing their lives, following the issue of them consuming too much alcohol.
He has also confirmed the existence of Nyeri County’s strategies together with the Kenya mountain counties’ union, to deal with the abuse of alcohol, efforts that had been started by the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua before he was dismissed from his office.
