The council of imams and Islamic preachers in the country CIPK is now asking the government to remove the tax on dates, during the month of Ramadhan, which is expected to start early next month.
According to the chairman of the national council, Sheikh Ibrahim Abdallah Ateka, the main goal of the Arab countries to send dates is to provide support to the believers of Muslim religion, who are unable to afford the price and not to achieve commercial gains.
Speaking to journalists in Mombasa county, Sheikh Ibrahim said that the removal of the tax on the product will bring relief to the Muslim believers, who will be participating in the Ramadan fast.
His statement has been supported by the general secretary of the council, Sheikh Muhammad Khalifa, who has asked President William Ruto to consider their request during the Ramadan season only.
