RESEARCH – 51 percent of Nairobi women are open to polygamous marriages with economic benefits.
Polygamy in Kenya is based on the traditions of various communities, with economic and social contribution, although the attitude is changing especially in urban areas.
The 2014 Marriage Act recognizes polygamous marriages, but requires the consent of those involved.
A Mwelekeo Insights survey has shown that 51 percent of Nairobi women are open to polygamous marriages if it brings them economic benefits, while 49 percent are completely against it.
This reflects a mix of attitudes about tradition, law, and economic issues in modern society.
