400 families in the Loiyangalani area of Marsabit County have benefited from food aid from the National government, as a way to address the problem of hunger in the region.
Speaking while overseeing the distribution of the food, Loiyangalani sub-county Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Stanley Kimanga, said that they received 60 bags of 50kg rice and 120 bags of beans from the Department of Dry Areas and Urban Development to help Loiyangalani residents who have been affected by hunger.
Kimanga further explained that the national government is increasingly providing food aid and essential services to the residents of Loiyangalani, while commending the Secretary in the Department of Dry Areas and Urban Development Kello Harsama, for ensuring that the residents of dry areas are effectively assisted.
“The government’s duty is ensure every citizen is fully catered for. The government has full information of regions affected by flood and droughts, and very committed to assist affected Kenyans. The President has assured Kenyans that no life will be lost because of hunger, and ensure that they are assisted,” Kimanga said.
He also urged residents of Loiyangalani to continue to maintain peace to allow development in the areas.
” As residents, you have been called upon to maintain peace, so as when drivers of relief food try to access the area, their lives are not threatened and kidnapped while distributing relief food for affected families,” he added.
The national government has also distributed relief food to residents of Saku Constituency, who were affected by ethnic clashes, as calls of peace and stop of ethnic incitements by leaders continue to be emphasized in the region by both local and national leaders.
In the exercise, 311 families received nags of rice and flour, while in their camps, as they have been displaced from their homes following clashes between rival communities.
During his Jukwaa la Usalama tour in the area, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, cautioned leaders of political and ethnic incitement, as the country nears elections in 2027, with high political temperatures, any form of incitement can escalate the situation.
