The Democratic Citizen’s Party (DCP), has blast the National Assembly for spending a whole afternoon session on Tuesday, May 27, to discuss their party leader and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.
According to the party, the show is quite interesting, as Gachagua is a national figure, who cannot be ignored, and has a massive influence to the parliament that was used to impeach him and calling him the villager.
“It is quite surprising that the same Parliament which impeached H.E. Rigathi Gachagua—once dismissing him as merely a “villager”—spent nearly the entire session yesterday discussing him, in a nationally televised debate in the National Assembly. This clearly shows that Rigathi Gachagua is a national figure, one whose influence and relevance cannot be ignored,” DCP stated.
The Gachagua led party further faulted the National Assembly instead of debating pertinent issues affecting Kenyans, like the crashing education system, increased in insecurity and the dwindling diplomatic relations, they have time to discuss Gachagua, who is not in government.
“The sad reality, however, is that Parliament chose to focus on personalities instead of addressing the urgent issues facing our country. Instead of debating the collapsing education system, the deteriorating national security situation—as cattle rustlers take over the North Rift—the worsening state of our diplomatic relations, or the reckless borrowing and leasing of public parastatals, they opted to center the discussion around Riggy G,” DCP further stated.
DCP adding that it is a missed opportunity and an embarrassment to Kenyans looking after the August House for leadership solutions and accountability on public resources, as it is an independent arm of government according to the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.
“It’s a missed opportunity and a disservice to the citizens who are looking to Parliament for leadership, solutions, and real accountability,” read the statement.
During the session, the MPs discussed the recent contacts of the former deputy president, including his controversial remarks on the 2007/2008 elections, saying that if the 2027 elections are tampered with, the events of 2007/2008 will look like a Christmas Party.
On the same day of discussion, the Party received a letter of cancellation from Sports Kenya on their prior booking of the Kasarani Stadium for the official launch of the party on June, Tuesday, 3. Sports Kenya said the venue had been booked by sports team and set aside for preparations for CHAN 2025, which will held at the complex.
The party condemned the abrupt cancellation as it is infringing on democracy, and that the facility is a public entity that can be accessed by any Kenyan for use of public good.
