Schools in Marsabit set to receive money for students sponsored by the county government as from next week, after a successful meeting by Council of Governors (COG), National Government and Ministry of Education, settled the the stalemate from the controller of budget.
According to Marsabit County governor Mahmoud Ali, funds earlier allocated to students sponsored by county government will be disbursed to respective schools official accounts starting Monday next week, to ensure that education is not further interfered with.
Ali confirmed the release during his Madaraka Day speech, which he led the county residents at Maikona in North Horr constituency. He explained to the residents that the delay in the disbursement of the funds was due to the conflict between the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o and the Council of Governors (COG), which has been settled.
“The county government sponsors students from vulnerable families through governors scholarship program across the country. Recently, the Controller of Budget faulted the program, but the COG along other stakeholders including National Government and the Ministry of Education reached an agreement on the stalemate and from next week, our schools will receive money so that our children stay in school,” Ali confirmed.
Nyakang’o had faulted projects by the governors, terming it unconstitutional, and called on consolidation of the funds.
Governor Ali further commended the county’s efforts in development progress in terms of infrastructure, education and the crucial health sector. Since taking over the county’s leadership Ali said the county has employed over 900 health workers to boost services in the hospitals across the county, with 153 being employed in 2025 so far.
“As a county we are drilling boreholes, constructing dams to solve the issue of water shortage. We are also not doing bad in terms of roads despite the ongoing court case. Our hospitals in the county have also made progress as we have employed 900 workers in various hospitals across the county, since we took powers in 2017. This year only, we have employed over 153 in the health sector,” Ali further said.
Additionally, Ali called on residents of North Horr and all the communities living in the constituency to promote peace, to attract investors and develop as other regions. His calls come after the constituency has witnessed a series of unspontaneous attacks that led to lose of four lives and houses torched.
“I’m urging all residents in Marsabit to keep peace, so as to make further progress. The fights between Gabbra and Wayu community in North Horr will derail development in the area. Let us live in peace,” Ali urged the residents.
Echoing his boss, Marsabit Deputy Governor Solomon Gubo lauded the county for hosting the celebration in the area, as it has portrayed a picture of unity and equality in the county, despite the frequent unrest witnessed in the county.
