Following the death of popular X blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang at the central Police Station, the National Police Service (NPS) has distanced itself from involvement in the blogger’s death.
In a statement on June, Sunday 8, NPS said that the blogger was lawfully arrested by the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for publishing false information, and held in custody.
According to NPS, the late blogger hit himself on the walls of the police cell while in custody, where the officers on duty rushed him to the Mbagathi Hospital, after noticing injuries on the ‘suspect’, where he was pronounced dead.
“NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang’ was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall. Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read the statement.
NPS further confirmed that according to the law, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), has launched investigations into the matter, further assuring Kenyans of their unwavering commitment to uphold human rights and the right of freedom, guaranteed by the Constitution.
Earlier while addressing journalists outside the police station, Ojwang’s father Meshack Opiyo, said the police stuffed him into their car from his home in Migori while having lunch. According to the distressed father, the DCI informed him that his son had abused his senior boss on X, and was told to follow the officers to the station.
“He was arrested and taken to Mawego police station, then later at night, he was transferred to Nairobi. The arresting police told me Albert had insulted a senior person on X,” Opiyo said.
Opiyo expressed his doubts, calling on the police to call out investigations.
The late X blogger and teacher was arrested yesterday at night from his home in Migori, before his controversial untimely death. His death contradicting the Kenya Kwanza government’s stand on forced arrest and death by police.
