Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has cautioned the new appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners not to interfere with the 2027 general elections, and work with diligent.
Speaking in Cherangany Constituency on Wednesday, 11, Natembeya urged the commissioners to work for Kenyans, despite being championed by a particular individual, as Kenyans will be watching on how they carry out their duties during elections, and expect professionalism from the team.
“There are politics, but we will only be assured when we see what you are doing, we will be observing everything, the ball is in your coat, you raise the bar and meet the expectations of Kenyans, Don’t be fooled that you can rig election in favour of anybody, kuna macho kila mahali, just be professional,” Natembeya stated.
He called on Erastus Ethekon, who was gazette by President William Ruto to replace the late Wafula Chebukati as the chairperson, to prove to Kenyans that he deserved the position by working for Kenyans and not the few who are being romoured to be close associates with, including former Turkana governor Josephat Nanok, who is currently working at State House.
“The one appointed as the chairperson of the Commission, even if someone helped you to get the position, the moment you get into that position be professional. Look at the duties that come with the position, are you a gatekeeper or you want to please few individuals, just prove yourself,” Natembeya remarked.
The vocal governor also questioned the conflict of interest witnessed in the selection process, with a section of commissioners linked to powerful government officials in association and also family related. According to Natembeya, Kenya is a vast country, that can have an independent individual work without favouring any side.
“The commission is place, the commissioners have been selected, but if you look closely, it is like the selected people know each other very well, despite the calls of a referee being independent, among 60 million people, they cannot select individuals that every one will be in agreement with, as they were selected fairly, as it is a very delicate docket and any suspicion of impartiality can bring chaos. Can’t we as Kenyans have a team that everybody can feel satisfied with?” He questioned.
The new commissioners are expected to serve for a period of six years.
