National Police Service (NPS) has clarified on the uniformed police officer seen in viral photos and videos holding laptops during the Tuesday protests in Nairobi CBD, through a statement by the NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
In a statement, NPS stated that the officer had recovered the laptops from a suspect who had broken into a shop while protests were going on, arrested the suspect and recovered four laptops that are now at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
The protests witnessed infiltration of goons who broke into shops in the city, stealing phones and other valuable goods from shops around CBD. NPS further stated that the officer was part of the team dispatched to manage the protests, which the protesters were demanding justice of X blogger Albert Ojwang’ who died at Central Police Station.
“NPS wishes to clarify that following recent protests in Nairobi, several shops were broken into and several items were stolen. Police officers arrested one suspect and recovered four laptops, which are now in safe custody as exhibits at the Central Police Station,” Nyaga clarified.
NPS has urged affected businesses whose premises were broken into and laptops stolen to visit the station and identify the recovered items.
“We therefore urge anyone whose premises were broken into and had laptops stolen to visit the station to identify the recovered items,” Nyaga urged.
Nyaga further confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to crackdown to identify and arrest those involved in the criminal acts witnessed during the protests.
The goons showed up for the protests armed with rungus, attacking and stealing from peaceful protesters, who were agitating against increased police brutality in the country, claiming to protect the city. Later in the evening, the goons were captured chanting Nairobi’s governor name Johnson Sakaja, for managing and protecting the city against protesters.
