Saboti lawmaker Caleb Amisi has faulted the move by government through Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), to order stop of live coverage on the ongoing protests in the country.
According to Amisi, the move by government is the beginning of a dictatorial state. Citing the war between Israel and Iran that was being broadcasted live since they began, he said that the move in infringing the right and freedom of the media as outline by the same Constitution they are referring.
He teared into the National Police Service (NPS) officers using expired teargas to disburse protesters in Nairobi Central Business (CBD), as a laughable move.
“Directing media houses to stop live coverage is the beginning of anarchy. If missiles from Iran to Israel are covered live sembuse expired orange teargas from Moi Avenue to Kenyatta Avenue? Media freedom and the right to information as enshrined in the constitution must be respected,” he wrote.
Amisi is among the first leaders in the political scene that have faulted the directive by government, that was also witnessed during the 2017 Raila Odinga led demonstrations, when he sworn himself as the people’s president, after the 2017 General Elections.
In a statement earlier signed by CA Director General David Mugonyi, directed that the live coverage of the Gen Z led protests currently being witnessed in Nairobi, Eldoret, Mombasa, Nakuru among others. According to Mugonyi, the coverage contravenes article 33 (2) and 34 (1) of the 2010 Constitution, as well as Section 461 of the Kenya information and Communications Act.
“The live coverage of the June 25th, 2025 demonstrations are contrary to Articles 33(2) and 34 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 461 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998,” Mugonyi ordered earlier.
He further said that media houses failing to adhere to the directive will face a shutdown according to Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998, which gives them the power.
