The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) confirmed the death of their security guard during June, Wednesday 25 Gen Z anti-government protests at Stima Plaza in Nairobi.
According to KPLC, the deceased identified as Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, was shot at around 4:30pm by the police officers managing the protests at the entrance of the building.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Mr. Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, a security guard stationed at our Stima Plaza headquarters was fatally shot at the entrance of the building at 4:30pm this evening during the ongoing protests,” KPLC confirmed.
KPLC further stated that the deceased was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. KPLC has stated that it is working with relevant authorities to ensure that the events surrounding the unfortunate incident are established.
“Mr. Wamale, an employee at Hatari Security, was on duty at the Kolobot Road entrance when the incident occurred. He was ushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. We regret the unfortunate death of Mr. Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” further read the statement.
Wamale is among nine people who died across the country from the protests, with 400 others including protesters, police officers and journalists, as reportedly by the Kenya National Commission Rights (KNCHR), with all deaths linked to gunshot wounds.
According to KNCHR, the deaths were reported in six counties including two in Machakos and Makueni, one in Nakuru, Kiambu, Uasin Gishu and Nyandarua. Additionally, the Commission reported that 61 protesters were arrested and detained in various protests across the 23 counties that witnessed protests.
“The Commission is alarmed by the continuous violation of Human Rights and non-adherence to the rule of law by both state agencies and select group of citizens,” KNCHR stated.
