Embakasi MP Babu Owino has claimed that the government has withdrawn his official security team following his decision to join the Gen Zs in marking of June 25 anniversary.
In a statement, Owino argued that it is right to participate in peaceful demonstrations, as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, claiming his decision does not in anyway pose threat to the security of the country.
“Yesterday, I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future. I exercised my democratic right to protest peacefully against the actions of a government that is failing its citizens. Today, in retaliation, the government has withdrawn my official security,” he stated.
He faulted the government’s move, as a violation of democracy, and punishing leaders who stand with the people. Owino further said that the Kenya Kwanza government decision to withdraw his security is a sign of avoiding accountability of their actions.
The vocal legislator stated that the move will not intimidate him, as his quest for demanding justice along other Kenyans will not be silenced, but they will soldier on until the affected families receive their deserved justice, further shading the state that the people of Kenya will protect him.
“Let me be clear: this is not just an attack on me, it is an attack on democracy itself. When elected representatives are punished for standing with the people, it is a sign of a government that fears accountability, not one that serves. I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. My voice, and the voice of every citizen demanding justice, fairness, and freedom, will only grow louder. Kenyans are my security,” he boldly stated.
Owino the popular MP among the youth, urged them to remain united and should not be intimidated by their leaders, as they are answerable to them. He encouraged them that the truth can never be silenced.
“To the public: stay alert, stay united, and know that your leaders should answer to you, not threaten those who stand beside you. The truth cannot be suppressed. The movement for justice cannot be stopped. We will not back down,” he concluded.
His withdrawal comes as government fails to uphold the High Court Order, suspending the directive by Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), to stop live coverage of the protests and the directive to switch on the transmission signals of KTN, K24 and NTV.
