Following his controversial resurfacing after missing for 13 days, blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia has been asked to report at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters to record a statement by the National Police Service (NPS).
In a statement released by NPS on Thursday, June 3, Kinyagia was reported missing, with NPS being accused by of abducting him after the information was circulated online. NPS has said despite his resurfacing, Kinyagia remains a wanted person, despite presenting himself before the Court.
NPS further emphasized its earlier statements that he was not in their custody, raising a concern over fake abductions to taint the name of the service, and providing false information to the police, which misleads the public and obstruct justice, by distorting the truth.
“The Service reiterates its earlier response that Ndiang’ui Kinyagia was not in our police custody. We take great exception to the emerging trend of feign abduction and providing false information to the police, intending to generate a misleading narrative that exploits public outrage and sensational headlines, thereby distorting the truth rather than focusing on justice,” Nyaga stated.
Nyaga further cautioned the public on such acts, as they damage the reputation NPS, and undermines the integrity of law enforcers, causing tension among members of the public. Additionally Nyaga stated that stage-managed abduction and providing false information amounts to criminal charges.
“The National Police Service wishes to remind the public that stage-managed abductions and providing false information to the police are criminal offences punishable by law. We therefore warn all persons against engaging in such acts,” NPS cautioned.
In a twist that has left the nation talking, Kinyagia showed up at Milimani Law Courts, after family advocate released a statement that the missing blogger had contacted a family member, that he will return if he is guaranteed of his safety and security.
Justice Chacha Mwita had ordered the DCI boss Mohamed Amin to present the blogger alive or dead, both appearing before Mwita, who directed that the blogger be taken to hospital, barring police officers from detaining him.
