The death toll following Monday, July 7 commemoration of historical Saba Saba Day has risen to 31, according to Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR), as of July 8, 7:00pm.
In Kiambu County six people were killed, including 12-year-old Bridget Njoki Wainaina was inside their home with her parents when a bullet, allegedly fired by officers during a confrontation with protesters outside, pierced through the house wall and fatally wounded her.
KNCHR released by vice chairperson Raymond Nyeris further stated that 107 protesters were injured, two (2) forced disappearances, as 523 have so far been arrested and property of unknown value destroyed.
The Commission further emphasized on its call to Kenya Kwanza government to uphold human rights, calling on accountability from the officers of the National Police Service (NPS), who fatally shot the protesters.
“The KNCHR strongly condemns all Human Rights violations and urge accountability from all responsible parties’ including police, civilians and all other stakeholders,” KNCHR emphasized.
The commission further sending its condolences to the affected 31 families, and message of quick recovery to all injured admitted across various hospitals across the country.
“We once again send our message of condolence to those who lost their loved ones and wish quick recovery to those nursing injuries,” further read the statement.
On Monday, protesters came out to commemorate the historic day that saw the beginning f multiparty democracy in the country, as well as freedom of speech in July 7, 1990. The day turned chaotic after the police erected barricades and roadblocks to block protesters from accessing CBD in 17 counties across the country.
According to the youth, they were marking the day following increased police brutality, extra0judicial killings, enforced disappearances and poor governance by President William Ruto. The youths further agitating over high cost of living and failed promises.
