Chelsea are the new Club World Cup champions after thrashing Paris Saint Germain (PSG) from France a thrilling final On Sunday, July 13 at MetLife Stadium in the United States, after Chelsea thrashed PSG 3-0 to be crowned the World Club Champions.
The match was greatly anticipated beating Argentina and France, with many betting their win on the UEFA Champions League and French Ligue 1 13 times champion PSG.
In a turn of events the Blues from Lindon controlled the first half of the match, with a magnificent opening goal from Cole Palmer at the 23 minute, before making it a brace at the 30th minute.
The disoriented French side failing to make up for the first half, few minutes after Chelsea’s new signing Pedro Neto netted the third goal for the Blue two minutes to the break. With the Coach Enzo Maresca stating that the team had a winning mentally before taking on the peach, with a clear understanding that they were playing against the best team in the world.
“The message was to let them understand that we were here to win the game and I think in the first 10 minutes we showed them that. I was lucky to be on the coaching staff of a team that won the Champions League a few years ago, but this competition features the best teams in the world and I think we can value it on the same level,” Maresca said after the match.
Despite showing a determined comeback in the second half, but failed to make it to the already charged up Enzo Maresca’s side, with uneventful night, PSG player Joao Neves capped a miserable night for his side when he was shown a straight red card.
Neves was seen pulling the hair of Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella in an incident off the ball that was subsequently reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
In a triumph speech, Maresca said that winning the Club World Cup meant as much as winning the Champions League. He took over the team a year ago, and the team has won two titles with him, with Conference League their latest win in May.
“I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League. It is a great triumph for us and it will allow the Chelsea fans to have that on our shirt for the next four years, so it is a source of pride,” he proudly stated.
