National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said that President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government has employed many teachers in the history of the country.
According to Wetang’ula, the president has delivered by employing 76,000 teachers since taking over in 2022, and has planned to employ 24,000 more teachers in the country to reach 100,00 mark.
He said that the 2025/2026 Financial Year budget has set aside the money to actualize the goal by the administration, with the education sector receiving the lion share in the budget of KSh
“Since President William Ruto took office, you have been told and it is true that in two years he has employed 76,000 teachers. In this year’s budget we have budget another share to employ 24,000 more teachers, so that in the five years, he would have employed 100,000. We have never had such milestone in the country since gaining independence,” Wetang’ula said.
His remarks coming weeks after principals raised concerns over retooling of the teachers in preparation of transition to Senior Secondary by Grade 9 students, with the government only retooling 7,000 teachers for the new rolled out education curriculum Competence Based Education (CBE).
Additionally, according to a report by the teachers’ employer Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), 229,200 primary teachers in primary schools, and 75,000 in junior secondary have been retooled.
KESSHA Chairperson and Chief Principal Murang’a High School Willy Kuria, said that the success of CBE is dependent on them, for students to receive quality education.
“If we want this new education system to be successful, we must ensure that teachers are retooled. This will ensure that our children receive quality education that aligns with the new education curriculum CBE,” Kuria said earlier.
The sector has been crippled with financial crisis, on Monday July 14, school heads called on the Ministry to release capitation funds, before learning activities are interrupted in schools across the country.
