The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), has directed a closure and discharge of all patients from Chiromo Hospital Group’s Braeside branch in Nairobi County following death of CEO Toto Touch Susan Njoki in the Hospital.
In a letter to the facility, the Council’s CEO Dr. David Kariuki cited that the decision follows a site visit to the facility, and a report of a possible involvement of one of the staff in the death of Njoki.
“Following further reports indicating the possible involvement of a member of your staff in the death of Susan Kamengere Njoki, the Council issues the following directives effective immediately,” Dr. Karikui stated.
Additionally, KMPDC has directed the hospital to stop all their medical and clinical services until further notice. With the directive calling on the hospital to respond to letter and ensure the response includes copies of the postmortem reports, along with all relevant patient records and documentation as requested.
Dr. Karikui also demanded an explanation from the facility on how they plan to stop repeat of a similar incident, and measures in place to ensure patients saftey within the hopsital.
“These directives are issued pursuant to CAP 253 and subsidiary legislation legal notice 171, The Medical Practitioners and Dentists (Inquiry and Disciplinary Proceedings) (Procedure) Rules 2022, Rule 8 to ensure patient safety and restore public confidence in the health system,” he noted.
Njoki died on July 15, after eating her meal, before she found dead in her bed, with autopsy result indicating that she was manually strangled to death four hours after her last meal in the hospital found in her stomach.
The report by six pathologists further indicated that she suffered serious pressure injuries to the neck, which cut off the oxygen supply to her body, eventually leading to her death. The report contradicting with earlier reports by DCI that said the late CEO died while being transported to the hospital.
Before her death, Njoki shared a clip narrating how her husband had brough two men who pinned her down, injected her with unknown drug before dragging her to the hospital against her will. She indicated that the men remained silent despite her pleas to tell her where they were taking her.
