A bus ferrying fans to opening ceremony of 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) caught fire in a terrifying incident in Dar el Salaam Tanzania busted into flames on Thursday, July 31, causing frenzy among fans.
The bus caught fire at Bushini area, Malenve Ward, Kwimba District, Mwanza region in Northern Tanzania a few hours before the ceremony and opening match between host Tanzania and Burkina Faso.
According to reports, the bus carrying fans was registered under Teachers’ Union in Misungwi District, and had 45 passengers inside. The fire was noticed by the driver who alerted the passengers and ensure all moved out safely without harm.
Confirming the incident, Mwanza Police Commander DCP Wilbord Mutafungwa said that no causalities were reported following the incident. He further stated that the bus started emitting heavy smoke before erupting into flames.
No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident. The Police Force thanks the citizens who responded swiftly and helped save lives before police and firefighters arrived,” said Mutafungwa.
According to a report by The Guardian Tanzania, the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the vehicle, and further investigations are ongoing in collaboration with other government authorities.
Tanzania is cohosting the continental championship along side Kenya and Uganda, which kicks off this weekend. Kenya will be playing its first match at Kasarani Complex Stadium on Sunday, August 3, against two times champion Democratic Republic of Congo.
