Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale has send a stern warn to eight universities over irregular placement of nursing students for government internship.
Speaking in Uasin Gishu County on Friday where he was commissioning Burnt Forest Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Duale said cautioned against placement of nursing students placed irregular were the ones who were recalled, affirming that Ministry will not condone such practices.
“Bachelor of Science student nurses posted one month ago were recalled because of posting irregularity and systemic corruption,” said Duale.
He noted that some of the students posted had not yet graduated, adding that the Ministry will only post graduates who provide their certificates for confirmation before deployment.
“Students posted for internship should be graduands, not those with completion letters. Completion is different from graduation. If you have a completion letter, we will not post you until you have a certificate,” he added.
The CS mention universities involved in the malpractice, terming Baraton University as the notorious one in irregular fronting students who have not graduated, stating that he will deal with those universities when he is still in office.
“I’m going to write a serious later to those eight universities led by a various notorious university called Baraton University, Kenyatta University, Dayster University, Kirinyaga University, Kisii University, Meru University of Science and Technology among others I will deal with them.
Duale said that the Ministry will deny students from the mentioned universities student license, and internship opportunities. He said that irregularity is being bred in universities and further spreading to the Nursing Council.
“The story of someone finishing his degree anapewa internship, and someone who has finished his studies two years ago is denied the opportunity; this story must end, we must run this country fair, just and in accordance with the law,” Duale warned.
His remarks coming two weeks after he suspended the Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK), Dr. Lister Onsongo, following a serious breach of regulations involving NCK and ten public and private universities that was uncovered by the Ministry.
the ministry said that the institutions unlawfully submitted 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students for internship before the completion of their academic programmes.
