Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has gazetted several areas in Narok County as security-disturbed and dangerous for a period of 30 days, following rising insecurity in the region. The move is intended to give security agencies adequate time and legal backing to carry out coordinated operations aimed at restoring peace and de-escalating the situation.
According to the gazette notice, the affected areas include Nkaroru in Trans Mara West Sub-County, as well as several locations in Trans Mara South Sub-County. These are Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Comer, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgotian Town and Mashangwa.
The declaration means that the areas will be subject to heightened security measures, including increased patrols, intelligence led operations and restrictions aimed at curbing criminal activities. Authorities say the interventions are necessary to address persistent security challenges that have disrupted normal life, threatened livelihoods and raised concerns among residents.
In the notice, the Interior CS said the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that the temporary designation is not meant to punish residents but to create a secure environment for long-term peace. He urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies, share information and comply with directives issued during the period.
Local administrators and security officials have also been directed to work closely with community leaders to ensure that operations are conducted professionally and with respect for human rights. The government noted that community engagement will be a key component of the intervention, alongside enforcement measures.
The 30-day period will be reviewed based on progress made on the ground, with the possibility of lifting or extending the designation depending on the security situation. Residents have been advised to remain calm as efforts to restore stability continue.
