Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi has been charged with possession of ammunition without a valid certificate according to the Court charge sheet.
Mwangi was arrested from his home in Lukenya Machakos county on Saturday, by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who had accused him of facilitating terror activities linked to the June 25 Anniversary Protests.
After his arrest the statement from DCI claimed that they had recovered two mobile phones, a laptop, and several notebooks; and later escorted him at his office Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd, a company stamp, six cheque books, copies of stamp duty documents, two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round.
On Monday, Kahawa Law Courts in said Mwangi had been found with three teargas cannisters, with no prior charges of terrorism as alleged by DCI.
“On 19th July, 2025, at Mageuzi Hub, in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of noxious substances to wit three Teargas canisters without [sic] lawful authority,” the charge sheet reads, “…you were found in possession of one round of a 7.62 x51mm blank ammunition without lawful authority,” read a part of the charge sheet.
Mwangi however pleaded not guilty to the two charges and was released on a cash bail of KSh 1 million by orders of Principal Magistrate Gedion Kiage, with the case scheduled for mention on August 19.
His arrest sparked public attention, with leaders accusing the State of using the Terrorism Act to intimidate dissenting voices and leaders from opposition.
On Monday, former LSK president Eric Theuri warning the country against using terror charges against citizens, as it will spark further anger among members of the public., he termed the charges as ridiculous ad misuse of the law.
Theuri further argued that the charges against protesters do not amount to terror related offenses, as terror related offenses include planning, financing and intending to cause massive widespread of property and loss of lives.
