Activists in Nairobi staged protests on Sunday, June 1, afternoon demanding the release of activist Rose Njeri, outside Pangani Police Station where the activist has been detained.
Activists including Boniface Mwangi, Hussein Khalid and the Njeri’s mother, led other activists to advocate for the release of the activist, denied after coming up with a website the help Kenyans to device, understand and submit their views about the 2025 Finance Bill.
Addressing the the media outside the station, Mwangi claimed that President William Ruto is afraid of the changes coming, as he understands Kenyans will reject the 2025Finance Bill , and are set to hit the streets on June 25.
“It is sad that we are still being arrested for being innovative. I feel like the President is afraid as his time is coming, he understands that on June, 25 we are back in the streets as the Finance Bill will be rejected, and we are not leaving until Njeri is released,” Mwangi said.
He said that the police are infringing on her rights, as she is entitled to a police bail, and visitation. According to Mwangi, Njeri has been detained at the station for three days, which is against law.
“Her bond is known very well, everything else is very clear, so there is no reason to keep her hear, but because they just want to show us their power they can do whatever they want, and that is exactly what they are doing; exercising power recklessly and impunity in abuse of power, we continue to remain vigilant as Kenyans to ensure until justice is done to Njeri and everyone else,” Khalid said.
During the protests, Njeri’s mother was denied entry into the station, she told journalists that she had come to give her changing clothes and other items she might need, but unfortunately she could not. She further said she wanted to understand why her lawyer has been denied access to her.
The distressed mother said that she was not aware of what her daughter was doing online, as she understood after her arrest. She also disclosed that her daughter has a medical condition, and she has not been able to access her medicines since her arrest.
“My sister has been with her, but I am the mother, I want to see how my daughter is,” she painfully said.
