The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has demanded an open and transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of X blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang’, from Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja.
While dressing journalists following the death of Ojwang’, Odhiambo demanded that Kanja must release the names to the public of the officers from Central Police Station he had interdicted, as well those who were ordered to transfer Ojwang’ from Homabay County to Nairobi.
She further faulted the explanation by the National Police Service (NPS) to the details on mysterious death of Ojwang’ as insufficient to help unravel the issue. Odhiambo also condemned the manner in which the security officers handled Ojwang’ to his untimely death.
“We will insist that they are brought to book before a court of law. In a country that we are saying we want citizens to abide by the rule of law, we also expect the National Police Service to abide by the same to bring us to the equilibrium as a country. we will not allow the police to bring us back to the dark days. We will consistently push that you are held accountable, one is above the law,” Odhiambo remarked.
Yesterday, Kanja confirmed that officers on duty during the unfortunate incident were interdicted including the OCS of Central Police Station, pending investigations into the matter. Further confirming that DIG KIPS Eliud Lagat is the complaint who led to the arrest of the blogger, following defamatory remarks made by the blogger.
On Monday, protesters staged protests outside City Mortuary and Central Police Station demanding justice for the deceased teacher, as well as resignation of Lagat to allow interfering with the investigations into the case.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday morning, former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino said that it was to early to call for the resignation of Lagat as he has a right to fair trial too. However, Owino faulted the statement by NPS.
According to him, how did he get hit on the head while he was alone in the cell chamber, stating that the statement is a theory cautioning junior officers from protecting their bosses, who could lead to their down fall.
