Former Chief Justice and presidential aspirant David Maraga has hit out at Kenya Kwanza government for showing no interest on the plight of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi, who is allegedly detained by the Tanzanian government.
Maraga has expressed his worries of President’s Samia Suluhu authority holding Mwangi without presenting him to court, which he terms as violation of international human rights. He demanded the the detained activist be freed immediately and unconditionally by the Tanzania Authorities.
“I am deeply concerned by the continued detention of Boniface Mwangi by authorities in the United Republic of Tanzania without access to the courts, legal counsel or consular representation, in clear violation of international human rights law. I condemn the failure by the Kenyan government to show any urgency in ensuring that Boniface Mwangi is freed immediately and unconditionally,” Maraga wrote.
Additionally, he urged the Musalia Mudavadi led ministry Foreign Affairs, to provide information about Mwangi, the reasons for his detention and what the ministry is doing to ensure Tanzania upholds international human rights.
“I urge the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs to urgently provide the public with clear information about of Boniface Mwangi’s specific circumstances; the reason the Tanzanian government continues to detain him; and what effort it is making to ensure that Tanzania complies with international human rights law,” Maraga further urged.
He also expressed his sympathies to the family that the country is in solidarity with them, after his wife broke down while addressing the media on Wednesday, May 21, while asking government to provide reports on the whereabouts of her missing husband.
Kenyans, led by Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna slammed Mudavadi after siding with Tanzania, on deportation and detention of Kenya Senior Counsel Martha Karua, lawyer Gloria Kimani, Lynn Ngugi, activist Hanifa Farsafi and former CJ Willy Mutunga.
However, Mudavadi received support from Kenya Kwanza controversial MP Oscar Sudi, who lauded the deportation, and said Suluhu should have detained the activists for two more days. Kenyans and human rights activist have continued to mount pressure to the Tanzanian Authority to release the two detainees from Kenya and Uganda.
