Wario Guyo, Mulate Buke and Malka Lakole 1 have been identified as three villages in Boru Haro area of Marsabit County, for maintaining proper hygiene, after inspection by public health officers inspecting the area.
According to the report inspection, the three villages had toilets that could cater for all residents, thus preventing open defecation.
While addressing residents in a public health meeting, Thomasi Ngangi ACC Gadamoji area, informed the residents that both the national and county government commended the steps taken by the three villages on importance of toilets in the area, further urging residents to maintain cleanliness
“I’m happy that today we are celebrating three villages for maintaining toilet cleanliness after training awhile ago. This is a great milestone to ending open defecation, so we must take pride of their efforts,” Ngangi said.
Additionally, Ngangi urged parents to teach their children on the importance proper use of the toilet, as clean toilets help prevent diseases.
“Let us train how to use the toilet at a younger age. We must maintain cleanliness, and embrace change that comes with it, and not practice what our elders did. As they grow, they learn and appreciate the need of having toilets around. It also reduces the work of the teacher once they start going to school!” he remarked.
Ngangi further challenged the residents of the four villages in Dirib Gombo location, to follow in the footsteps of Boru Haro villages to maintain clean toilets. He said that the situation might affect all those around, as once the crucial structure misses, the population in the area affects everyone in the surrounding.
Ngangi has urged Marsabit residents to give priority to the issue of toilet construction, when starting up buildings, houses or any construction in the countryside.
“Once you start building your home, the toilet should be the first structure to be put up. As it will help those doing the work at the site to ease themselves. In the current generation, it is very shameful for a toilet structure to miss in a homestead. Let us maintain cleanliness to ensure that we prevent diseases associated with lack of toilets, as it will enhance cleanliness in our environment,” he urged.
The move by the three villages increasing the number of villages with effective and proper use of the toilets to prevent open defecation from 354 to 357 villages in Marsabit County, a move highly commented by the department of health in the county, urging residents to embrace the use of toilets to protect themselves against diseases.
