The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has officially announced a significant increase in prize money for the upcoming TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The move is aimed at further promoting women’s football across the continent and rewarding the remarkable talent and dedication of female players.
In his announcement, Dr. Motsepe emphasized CAF’s continued commitment to elevating the status of women’s football in Africa and ensuring that female athletes receive the recognition and financial support they deserve. The revised prize structure is one of the boldest steps taken so far to bridge the financial gap between men’s and women’s football in Africa.
New WAFCON Prize Structure:
Winner: $1,000,000
Runner-up: $500,000
Third Place: $350,000
Fourth Place: $300,000
Quarter-finalists (4 teams): $200,000 each
Third in Group Stage: $150,000
Fourth in Group Stage (3 teams): $125,000 each
This substantial increase in prize money is expected to motivate teams and players, enhance the competitiveness of the tournament, and attract more investment and sponsorships into women’s football.
Dr. Motsepe noted, “The growth of women’s football is a top priority for CAF. We are committed to creating more opportunities and ensuring that our female footballers are adequately rewarded for their hard work and excellence on the field.”
The TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has steadily grown in stature, drawing millions of viewers across the continent and beyond. The revised financial rewards are set to further strengthen the tournament’s position as one of Africa’s premier sporting events.
CAF’s progressive move is widely seen as a step in the right direction in the broader push for gender equity in sports and a signal of the growing importance of women’s football on the African continent
