After missing the seat by a whisker to incumbent Governor Mahmoud Ali, former North Horr Legislator Chachu Ganya has announced that he will be in the ballot for the seat in 2027.
In the 2022 August general elections, Ganya emerged second, during an interview; the former lawmaker refuted claims of being someone’s project, Ganya said that he has a national outlook, he is acting out of volition to serve the people of Marsabit, as he has been in leadership for more than 15 years, and he is not an implant among the people of Marsabit.
“I will be on the ballot, as I now have experience unlike before, and I am making plans come 2027, along with other leaders. I’m not anyone’s project, the people of Marsabit known very well for more than 15 years, it is my own personal decision to vie for governorship, so I cannot be anyone’s project,” Ganya dismissed the claims.
His remarks come after allegations of Governor Mahmoud Ali planning to field a candidate in 2027, to divide the community’s votes. Among those mentioned include current Women Representative Naomi Waqo, Mp Billow Kerrow and Roba Duba. However, Ali dismissed the claims stating that it was out of malicius to tarnish his name.
Ganya said that among his priority in his leadership would be restoring peace in the region; he however commended the efforts made by those in leadership, stating that peace is core for any society to progress. According to him, the peace in any society is the responsibility of the leadership of the day, to act on capacities and policies mandated to them by the constitution, to ensure that people live in peace.
“Peace will be my priority in my leadership, as without peace it is difficult to execute development in any area, if we work together as leaders, peace ambassadors and the national the communities to ensure that there is peace, development will spark in Marsabit like other regions,” he said.
He said his other area of focus include developing education, as education cannot only spark development, but also end the menace and norms by the community about cattle rustling; improving the health sector as well as water and sanitation in the county.
Addressing his fallout with the county’s first governor and former National Treasury CS Ukur Yattani, Ganya said he has no plans to work with him, as he is a leader with poor vision and full of hatred.
He said the leadership of Marsabit will be decided by the people and not appointees and projects. The outspoken former legislator said that the entry of Yattani in the gubernatorial race does not intimidate him at any levels.
“The one who will win that is it, it is not my worry. It does not scare me at any moment. I have no plan at any point to work with Yattani; he is a leader with poor ideas and full of hatred. Everybody will work out their way,” Ganya clarified.
Ganya clarified that he has no problem with the current leadership of Marsabit, stating that they have a good working relationship, as they are the ones that the people bestowed trust in to lead them.
The former lawmaker also disclosed that he is currently working as a Director at Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and a member of Kenya Lab Trust, serving Kenyans in 10 counties. Additionally, the former legislator is the chairperson of Modern Fund Foundation that is sponsoring over 1500 students from vulnerable families in Marsabit County to access education in high schools, universities and colleges.
