Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino has questioned Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja’s statement on the circumstances leading to the death of Migori X blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang’, who was allegedly found inside his cell unconscious.
According to Owino, the reliance of Kanja on OCS report raises a lot of questions, as how were the police officers able to understand that the deceased was hit on the head and laid unconscious when he was locked alone in the cell. Owino stating that the statement by OCS Central Police Station was a fabrication.
“The IG relied on the situational report that was send by the OCS, but the question that later came up was , it is said he was alone in the custody in his own cell, and therefore you can only come up with a theory of somebody hitting his head, if he was with two or three other people who could have witnessed! So if there was nobody, then how do you come up with this theory? That alone gives a bad image,” Owino questioned.
Owino further cautioned the police officers to stop protecting their seniors, as with the unpredicted future in the police force, they could lead to their downfall, calling on the OCS, officers on duty, cell sentry on the night of the incident, to explain to Kenyans exactly what happened to Ojwang’ on that unfortunate night, as well as wait on the autopsy result to fully explain what lead to the death of the 31-year-old.
“Things happen, sometimes you can be protecting a person that can later destroy you, the autopsy will be very important but most importantly those officers on duty, and cell sentry should tell us what happened, could some people have gotten into the cell that night and if they did who are those people?” Owino further questioned.
Following the death and public outrage, Kanja interdicted the OCS, cell sentry and policer officers on duty that night, pending investigation into the matter. Additionally, Kanja disclosed that the DIG KIPS Eliud Lagat was the complainant leading to the arrest of X blogger Ojwang’ on Saturday.
