Three suspects arraigned in the murder of late slain Kasipul legislator Charles Ong’ondo Were, have been released by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Court, citing lack of evidence.
In a ruling on June, Thursday 5, the three Juma Ali Haikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu and David Mihigo Kagame, added to the list of five people discharged following lack of evidence, that were earlier recommended by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), to links with the murder of the MP Were.
On June 3, Makadara Law courts Magistrate’s Court discharged two other suspects, Dennis Sewe Manyasi (Were’s driver) and Walter Owino Awino. The three will now serve as state witness in the murder case.
Earlier, business Mogul Philip Aroko, who shocked many by dropping his Lawyer Danstan Omari, and sought to defend himself was releases on a cash bail of KSh 300,000, with JKIA court.
The High Court had denied bail to the three suspects accused of murdering Were. The decision followed a shocking courtroom incident after one of the suspect threatened to kill the prosecutor during proceedings at Milimani Law Courts.
The accused told the court that one of the accused persons had threatened to kill Allen Mulama, an officer with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), leading to the prosecutor to leave the proceedings.
Shocked by the bluntly remarks of the accused person to the officer if the courts fails to release him on bond, Justice Diana Kavedza, directed that the accused be remanded at the Nairobi Remand prison,
“I take note that the accused person has threatened to kill the prosecutor. The mere utterance of the words ‘huyu tutamuua’, the question is, what about the witnesses? On these grounds, the three are denied bond or bail. The first accused is to be escorted to Mathari Hospital for assessment,” Kavedza directed.
She said that the case will be mentioned on June 17 for further directions.
