Democratic Citizen’s Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua said that the party will be launched on July 7, as agreed by the party officials, with the venue to be communicated soon.
Speaking when he met leaders from Narok and Kajiado counties at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County, Gachagua said the party will decide between Narok and Kajiado to be the official venue for the unveiling of the party.
“This celebration is yours. Prepare to welcome guests and guard the meeting. We’ve agreed to hold the launch on the seventh of July,” Gachagua said.
The former DP accused the government for frustrating the party’s effort to officially unveil the party, which had earlier been set for June 3, before being denied access by Sports Kenya, which said Kasarani Stadium was under renovation in preparations of CHAN later in August this year.
The now turned opposition leader, Gachagua faulted the way the government handled Gen Zs during the 2024 Anti-Finance Bill Protests in June, which he further echoed was among the genesis of his fallout with President William Ruto, as he opposed excessive use of force by the police officers.
He argued that the Gen Zs have the right to air their views, and should be heard. He further revealed that following their fallout on response to protests, they never saw each other face to face, and only communicated through messages.
“They have a right to be heard, and I disagree with what William Ruto has done. That’s when our fallout began. Now we barely speak only through messages. Alikuwa anatuma message pia mimi najibu na message,” Gachagua further stated.
As both the police and protesters prepare, Gachagua’s ally from the Maa community Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo, called on the police Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja, to remind his officers on their sole duty of protecting Kenyans and their properties.
“Your job is to protect lives and property, as we approach June 25, if young people come out to peacefully protest again, don’t repeat what you did last year,” Ngogoyo said.
Former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, and DCP National Organising Secretary also present at the meeting, called for unity and problem-solving through dialogue.
