Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a fatal car accident in northern Spain, just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart.
The Portuguese forward was travelling in his Lamborghini alongside his younger brother, André Jota, aged 26, who also lost his life in the crash. Reports indicate that the vehicle’s tyre may have burst while overtaking on the A-52 highway, approximately 70 miles west of Valladolid. The car veered off the road, crashed, and caught fire in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Jota had recently celebrated his marriage to Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children. In a heartfelt message following the wedding, he had described himself as “the luckiest man in the world” to have married her.
The accident occurred in the province of Zamora, on a well-travelled route frequently used by motorists heading out of northern Portugal.
Emergency services in the Castilla y León region confirmed the crash and the two fatalities at around 12:35 a.m. local time.
In an official statement, emergency authorities reported:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received multiple calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. The vehicle involved was on fire.”
“The 1-1-2 service alerted the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Centre (CCU) to respond to the scene of the accident.”
