Inspector General of Police Dougla Kanja has disclosed that Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, is the complainant against the arrest of deceased Migori X blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang’.
While addressing the press, Kanja disclosed that Lagat had made complains about defamation from Ojwang’, which prompted an immediate probe on the case.
“There was a complaint that had been launched by the DIG KPS, about his name being tarnished. It is on that basis that investigations were actually being carried out because he also has a right to be protected by the same law,” Kanja stated.
Before the presser, Kanja alongside Lagat and Masengeli made a visit to the crime scene, Nairobi Central Police Station along Moi Avenue, to access the area, where the deceased was being held after arrest by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to NPS, Ojwang’ was found in his cell room unconscious before being rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
However, Ojwang’s family lawyer Julius Juma, while addressing journalists outside City Mortuary where his body is laying, said that the deceased had injuries on the head, hands and on the shoulder areas, with a lot of blood oozing from both the mouth and the nose.
“The body had a lot of injuries on the head, hand and the shoulder areas , but the head was swollen all round. The frontal part of the head, the nose the ears, generally the head was swollen and there was a lot of blood oozing from both mouth and the nose,” said Juma.
The statement by NPS has been dismissed by Human rights Activists, leaders and Kenyans as not convincing. The NPS report states that the ‘suspect’ hit himself on the cell walls he was detained after his arrest on Saturday.
Former chief Justice David Maraga, who said the death of Ojwang’ is shaking, and exposing the dangers Kenyans face while expressing their dissenting views, to the government that has sought to silence the voices of Kenyans.
Following the pressure from the members of the public, Kanja interdicted senior officers at Central Police Station, as well as all officers on duty at night, and those linked to the death.
