Director General for Health Patrick Amoth issued an update on the status of the hawker shot at point-blank range in Nairobi CBD during protests.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday evening, Amoth confirmed that the vendor was shot on the head, and received immediate first aid, when he was received at Kenyatta National Hospital.
“The patient was received here at around four o’clock, we still do not have his details in terms of name and age. He was promptly evaluated by an emergency team, and necessary first aid administered and necessary tests conducted,” Amoth said.
Amoth added that after evaluation, the neurosurgeons recommended immediate surgical intervention for the vendor, following the assessments.
“Evaluation by the neurosurgeons indicated that he was required to undergo an emergency neurosurgical procedure. As we speak, the patient is in theatre with the neurosurgical team,” he further stated.
Amoth also revealed that intensive care arrangements had already been put in place in anticipation of post-surgery needs.
“As a precaution, we have prepared an ICU bed because a case of such nature requires ICU support immediately in the post-operation period,” he stated.
The incident has sparked national outrage and led to the arrest of the police officer involved. In a statement, In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that the Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja had ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officer involved, who was unmasked by Kenyans in a few hours after his photo went viral.
The National Police Service (NPS) has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun, within the Nairobi Central Business District on 17th June 2025. Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested,” read the statement.
Leaders from across political divide condemned the barbaric act against an innocent unarmed civilian, calling for action against the officer captured shooting at the vendor.
Earlier, Lawyer Nelson Havi had questioned the recent comfort by police officers, who have fully assumed the right to kill, without caution, as former CS Interior Fred Matiang’i called for immediate reforms in the police service.
