Residents of Dukana in Marsabit County are benefitting from adult education, being championed by Mr. Diba Guyo Dera’s initiative, to teach them basic language and skills, which will improve their quality of life.
The initiative is geared towards highlighting the importance of education among the elder members of the community, by offering afternoon classes in the area, in order to accommodate adults who could be engaged during the day.
In teaching the locals other than their mother-tongue, Guyo says the platforms gives opportunity to residents to learn, know and understand how to express themselves, which will help get rid of translators, who at times might distort the intended information to be passed across.
“Literacy classes in Dukana all are called to get basic adult education, basic language Kiswahili English and Maths. The main aim is to get rid of translation assistants, every one should at least know how to express him/herself. By offering classes in the afternoon, the program accommodates adults who may have other responsibilities during the day to making education more accessible to them,” said the founder.
Expressing their support to the initiative Boru Guyo a resident said, that the noble initiative should be started across the county to benefit other residents within the county.
“We hope this kinda initiative to be extended across the entire Chalbi coz our people really need it,” Boru Guyo said.
The initiative coming at a crucial time, when the input of parents will be required to help their children transitioning to grade 10, to choose their pathways and schools of choice. With the basic knowledge, the parents will be able to contribute in their children’s life decision, which was earlier threatened by illiteracy.
