Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his 2027 presidential bid, staging himself as the best fit candidate and choice of the Gen Zs, who are calling for a change in the government.
Maraga made the declaration during ana interview with NTV on Wednesday that he will run for presidency, after days of soul searching and consultation with friends, that called for his decision to take over the country’s leadership.
Additionally, Maraga said that the recent mishandling of youths by the government including forced disappearances, abductions and killings of young people when they check on government and call out corrupt leaders.
“This has come as a result of what has happened in the country, to see how our young people are being handled it is extremely worrying. After discussions with friends and serious reflection, I thought it is time we think about the leadership of this country,” Maraga said.
According to Maraga, he will not allow a few individuals to plunge the country into misery and dark days, that the country has fought for.
“We cannot let some people take our country into the dark days, it is the result of that reflection that I made up my mind that I will run in 2027 as a presidential candidate,” Maraga declared.
Being a likely choice of the Gen Z led protests, Maraga together with his family support the Gen Z-led protests, and confirmed he will participate in them to demand accountability for police killings and to defend constitutional rights.
““I will be offering my solidarity by joining freedom of assembly events on June 25,” Maraga earlier said in his statement on the commemoration of Gen Zs killed in June 2024 protests in Parliament Bunge Tower.
This is the first time, Maraga has publicly declared that he will run for presidency, however, over in the past several months, Maraga has been meeting various groups of people, including youths from across different parts of the country, for consultations.
He has also been at the forefront in calling out the Kenya Kwanza administration failures, as well as the callous way in handling issues of public importance.
