While addressing the residents and elders in Dukana Location in North Horr Constituency, former 2022 gubernatorial candidate Chachu Ganya has called on the residents to promote and maintain peace in the area.
Speaking after meeting the elders of the two communities on Saturday, May 31, Ganya reinforced the importance of solving their differences through peaceful methods, so as not to interfere with the calmness of the people.
He further lauded the joint efforts of local administration and security teams that ensured calmness and peace returns in the area, especially in Dukana Location, which has experienced frequent unrest in the area.
The conflict led to loss of lives, destruction of property and stolen livestock in the past two weeks. However, Dukana Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Peter Kimani confirmed a success recovery of stolen livestock from Saru and Dukana Location. According to Kimani, 860 goats and sheep, 232 goats and sheep from Dukana and Saru locations respectively, have been recovered.
Ganya’s remarks come after a series of peace calls by the county heads and peace stakeholders, for need to maintain peace and live in harmony, between the two worrying communities, Wayu and Gabbra. They have been called upon to embrace peaceful methods of solving conflict, including use of mediation and dialogue, and also shun instances of revenge, as it escalates the situation further.
Following the conflict, four people were reportedly dead, as Kimani urged residents to help the security agencies to help recover the guns and other weapons used by the perpetrators of the attacks.
Earlier, the commuity hosted a joint prayer meeting on Monday, May 26, at Dukana Nomadic girls School to pray for peace and calmness in the area following a clash the conflict.
Dukana MCA Adano Boru called on Kenya Police Reserve (KPR) officers, to name those instigating conflict between the two communities living in the area, after a house was burned down days after peace started returning in the area.
The conflict had been linked to a member of County Assembly from the area, and a powerful political figure working in Nairobi. The calls of peace continue to intensify in the county, as Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen urged local leaders to stop inciting the citizens as election year slowly approaches.
