Former Harambee Stars captain and midfielder Victor Wanyama has hinted at a potential return to international football, is currently playing in the Scottish Championship Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland.
Speaking during an interview with BBC, Wanyama said the Harambee Stars coach and South African National Benni McCarthy, has approached him on returning to play for the national team.
The experienced midfielder, retired from national duty in 2021, revealed that new Harambee Stars head coach has made several attempts to convince him to reconsider his decision.
“I’ve spoken to him a few times, and he’s been trying to persuade me to come back,” Wanyama said during the interview.
He acknowledged McCarthy as an experienced coach and football tactician, as he has played in the English Premier League (EPL), with Manchester United. Wanyama said that he is the right person for the national team as comes with experience from a competitive league in the world.
However, Wanyama said he will make an announcement about the offer from the national team’s coach offer soon, as he has put the opportunity into consideration.
He’s a top coach, having worked at Manchester United. He brings a lot of experience and is exactly what Kenya needs right now. “I’m giving it serious thought, and I’ll be making an announcement very soon,” Wanyama said.
The first Kenyan to play in the Scottish Premiership, he made his name by winning two league titles and a Scottish Cup, success that earned him a big-money move to Premier League side Southampton in 2013.
He would go on to be part of the Tottenham Hotspur team that reached the UCL final in 2019, before moving to Canada for a five-year spell with Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact.
Locally, Wanyama played for AFC Leopards and Nairobi City Stars, before receiving international recognition, where he further exceled in his football career.
