With speculations of about United Opposition being divided over who will face President William Ruto in 2027 General Election, former DP Rigathi Gachagua has responded to those calling him out for fronting himself as the best candidate.
Gachagua said that there is nothing wrong with him fielding himself as the best candidate, as all his colleagues including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Fred Matiang’i are doing the same.
“There is nothing wrong when I say I want to be president, it’s the same thing that Matiang’i, Kalonzo, and Karua are doing,” Gachagua said.
He further stated that the opposition chiefs have chosen unity over personal advances, emphasizing his earlier calls that the team will support whoever will be decided as the presidential candidate to oust Ruto in the coming election.
He stated that the team is currently soliciting for votes in their backyards, and the person with the highest number of votes will be settled on as the flag bearer, with support from the rest of the members in united opposition.
“As opposition leaders, we all had the ambition to become president, but we chose unity over personal interests and agreed to support one flag bearer. We decided that each of us would go out, seek votes and support individually, then come together and compare our efforts. Whoever has the most support would become the flag bearer,” he said.
In his address last week, Wamalwa urged their supporters not to panic, as the rush by the government pushing for the name their candidate, is a strategy to weakness their movement, but they will not board on that..
He called on leaders from government to focus on their issues, and stop interfering with the opposition, clarifying that they had not agreed on any sitting about who will lead the team to clinch country’s top job.
