Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i presidential bid receives a blow, as Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo announces that he will be seeking legal interventions to block Matiang’i from presidential race, over killings witnessed during his tenure as Interior CS with the Jubilee administration.
Speaking during a televised interview, the MP said that his petition is in the last stages, which will stop the former CS from vying over what he termed as state sponsored deaths, with reference to 0ver 30 bodies discovered at River Yala.
“I had a meeting with lawyers yesterday evening, and we finalised on a case to present a petition Court, after listening to Matiang’i speaking about the bodies at River Yala, he must be held responsible as they happened during his time in office,” He stated.
Additionally, the legislator accused Matiang’i for overseeing environmental and humanitarian destruction in parts of his Constituency. According to Odhiambo, the dumping of bodies in River Yala amount to environmental terrorism, threatening the well-being of his constituents.
However, during an interview on Tuesday, Matiang’i disclosed that the case was still active with the Inspector General (IG) of Police then Hillary Mutyambai and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He linked slow investigation into the matter as the reason for delayed justice and called for government to do a public inquest into the deaths.
Matiang’i further expressed his readiness to witness before the Court to answer on the high profile deaths during his tenure as Interior Cabinet, distancing himself from involvement into the deaths that shook the nation.
The death of IEBC ICT Manager Chris Msando, a bodyguard attached to the then Deputy President William Ruto, murder of Jacob Juma and the Kianjakoma Brothers.
“The incident was reported and I know it the way you know it. We asked several questions about the matter. There are several other cases which were also under investigation. The DCI kept saying the file is still open, even if you’re the President, there is nothing you can do. You go by what the IG tells you,” Matiang’i stated.
