Marsabit County Director of Education Peter Magiri, has said that the national government is ready to partner with stakeholders from different sectors to improve the quality of education in the county.
According to his speech read by North Horr Sub-County Director of Education Mamo Gutu, during the marking of Education Day on May 31, Magiri said that the government is committed to ensure that schools are built in safe and secured environments for the learners together with their teachers.
Magiri in his speech further elaborated that the Department of Education is ready to provide guidance to education stakeholders in the county, who have plans to build schools and improve quality of education in Marsabit County.
Mamo further explained to the church that County Education Department, approves and registers new and existing schools, as well as carrying out quality assurance assessment to ensure provision of quality education, as well as provision of teachers.
He explained other mandates by the ministry of education, including provision of capitation to schools, supporting curriculum activity as called for by the new education system Competence Based Education (CBE), as well as providing learning materials for schools.
“The Ministry of education committees to offer provision advice and other support when called upon by education stakeholders. This guidance includes when opening a new institution; they give the requirements after visiting the site and recommend what is required by the law, to ensure safety of the students and their teachers and suitability of the school,” read a section of the speech
However, Catholic Bishops of different dioceses have been urged to collaborate with education officers in the county, to ensure that they receive further information about guidelines that govern the education sector in the country.
“We urge our catholic priests to liaise with our field officers at the zonal office, with the curriculum support officer and other education from the county levels through the ministry of education and TSC, quality assurance for advice and guidance. The BOM should also be active in managing schools,” Mamo further read.
The Department of education further lauded the efforts by Catholic Church for investing in education to ensure better quality of education in the county, as further calls have been made to other stakeholders to invest in the education sector.
He further lauded the Catholic Church in upholding the Constitution in the education sector as stated in the Basic Education 14 of 2013 and provision of infrastructure, promotion education standards and provision of religious guidance to learners, the role the church has fully executed.
“We acknowledge the role the church has played in providing education to hard reach areas, building schools and employing teachers. These schools are known for good producing students with good morals and character wise,” Mamo commended.
Similar remarks that were echoed by Marsabit County Commissioner James Kamau, who that students from Catholic schools have high standards of discipline and morals, and are well behaved even beyond school.
