The Cabinet has endorsed the new upcoming launch of National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, which seeks to provide employment opportunities for the youth, in a meeting chaired by President William Ruto on Tuesday, July 29.
With the launch set for August, Nyota program will see government partnering with World Bank to reach 820,000 vulnerable, unemployed youth including persons living with disability.
According to the Cabinet dispatch of Tuesday meeting at State House, the program aims to enhance employability, skills recognition, and access to decent work.
The program will be structured in three categories including paid on-the-job training, entrepreneurship support, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certification. With the dispatch noting that over one million applications have been received.
“The ongoing call for the on-the-job experience programme targets 90,000 youth for three to six months paid placements with employers, with monthly stipends of Ksh.6,000 deposited into Haba Haba savings accounts,” read part of the Cabinet News.
The program closely aligning with Bottom-UP Economic Trans Formation Agenda (BETA), which aims to uplift and empower people economically, seeks to offer opportunities in the country, alongside Climate WorX that has given opportunity to over 200,000 youths across the country.
Application for absorption into Nyota programs runs from July 11-August 15.
The programs comes as the country’s unemployment rate takes a high spike, with World Bank 2024 report indicating the unemployment rate of Kenyan youths is 5.7%, while The Federation of Kenya (FKE) report indicating that 35% of unemployment rate in the country is accounted by youths.
Annually, millions of youths graduate from universities and flood the job markets, which Climate WorX and Nyota programs, aim to increase job opportunities particularly among youth through a combination of approaches such as funding for small-scale traders, skills development programs, and targeted support for women and youth entrepreneurs.
“As part of our financial empowerment programme for those at the base of the economy, Nyota will enhance employability through training, work experience, recognition of prior learning, entrepreneurship, and a savings culture,” President William Ruto said during the 62 Madaraka Day Celebrations in Homabay County.
