Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is the latest leader to throw a jab to the Broad-Based government between Kenya Kwanza and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Speaking on Tuesday, Natembeya said that the new agreement between the head of opposition Raila Odinga and President William Ruto has greatly undermined accountability by the regime and checks from the opposition.
According to Natembeya, the Broad-Based government arrangement is not for the common mwananchi but a few individuals who want to reward themselves.
“Broad-based government is an escape from accountability, that the people who are supposed to be criticising you join the eating table and therefore they keep quiet. It is actually bread-based, not broad-based,” Natembeya explained.
Natembeya further said as other regions get rewarded and divided in tribal blocks, Trans Nzoia County remains deserted as it is a cosmopolitan county, with almost all tribes from the country residing in the county. Further arguing that his cabinet and employees in the county are from all tribes in the country.
He questioned why the national government cannot bring about balance in government positions, instead of giving out positions for convenience and rewarding political loyalists.
“My government has got all the communities, I have balanced that way. If I was to behave the way the national government behaves and say I was voted for by 80 per cent of Luhyas, I would give them 80 per cent of everything. But I realised this is a cosmopolitan county and I gave slots to people who did not vote for me. Why can’t the national government do that?” Natembeya questioned.
He further compared the infiltration of goons in protests in Nairobi and the attack on opposition’s convoy in Chwele in Bungoma by goons he alleged claimed were hired by Sirisia MP John Waluke, with both being manned by police officers, questioning the government’s tolerance on goons towards, cautioning that it is how Haiti started.
