Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that he has joined President William Ruto’s side in Kenya Kwanza government.
On Monday, Natembeya hosted Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen at his new office at County Assembly headquarters, where Murkomen was presiding over Jukwaa La Usalama Trans Nzoia Edition.
Murkomen was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police Administration (DIG) Gilbert Masengeli, other security officials and Kwanza MP Ferdinand Barasa, at Natembeya’s office.
The county boss said that their meeting was narrowed to specific challenges affecting Trans Nzoia county, including the menace of land grabbing.
“We agreed on need for stronger joint and collaboration between national and county governments to tackle such chalenges head-on and promote peace, security and sustainable development for the people of Trans Nzoia,” Natembeya stated.
Following their meeting, speculations emerged if Kenya Kwanza courting the vocal governor to join government. Setting the record straight, Natembeya said that the meeting has nothing to do with his political stand, but was protocol based.
He further stated that being the county boss, he is required to host all national government officials visiting Trans Nzoia County. Natembeya said that he fully understands the protocol of a visiting national official.
He explained that any visiting government official must be taken to the County Commissioner, before being taken to the governor’s office to sign the visitors book.
“I was once a county commissioner, so I know these things. Did people expect me to run away from the CS? Definitely he would come to the my office, who would he find? I welcomed and greeted him, before he left for his engagements, and I left for Nairobi,” he explained.
He emphasized that they are still in opposition, and are focused in changing the country, as it is not headed in the right direction. Natembeya said that a single visit cannot change by a visit to his office by a government official.
“Our stand is still the same, we are on the other side; the opposition. We want to bring change in our country, because we believe that the country is not headed in the right direction. That one does not change because someone from government visited Natembeya!” He remarked.
Natembeya who has rubbed shoulders with the government over his remarks, said that he fully understands the consequences that come with criticising the government, a focus he said shall not relent for a better Kenya and people.
“We are paying the price for that, which even Kenyans fully understand that what we are saying have consequences and we are bearing those consequences with dignity with grace. Once government is rattled, they can arrest you, I have been in government I know and understand these things, but for the sake of Kenyans, I have no business being in government,” he clarified.
