Isiolo County Governor Abdi Guyo has survived an impeachment motion brought the County Assembly, after the Senate dismissed charges against him, citing irregular procedures.
Guyo survived after 31 elected senators supported the motion to uphold objection, which ended the impeachment proceedings, with 12 senators opposing the motion.
During the proceedings, the Senate upheld the objections that were raised by the embattled governor’s legal team, which argued that the County Assembly had failed to conduct a justifiable impeachment process.
Following the defense, a majority of senators agreed with Guyo’s team that the County Assembly did not hold sittings on June 18 and 26 to debate the removal of the governor in office, and further noted that there was an active Court order in stopping the County Assembly from debating the impeachment motion of Guyo.
After a majority of the vote, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said that the Senate had made it clear in its communication that if the objections on whether the County Assembly of Isiolo had validly held proceedings on June 18 and 25, was upheld, the impeachment motion will automatically be terminated.
“This motion having been passed, the impeachment proceedings in the matter of the proposed removal from office of the Governor of Isiolo County have forthwith terminated,” Kingi declared.
Following the termination, the scheduled special sittings to Thursday, July 10 was further terminated, and Senate will resume its normal duties from Wednesday.
Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu stated that despite the Constitution of Kenya outlining the removal of governor from office, the outline procedures must be followed, and act within the law, ensuring that both the Governor and the County Assembly receive justice.
ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, supported the motion, but further cautioned against contempt of orders.
“It would be the darkest day for any lawyer if court orders are disobeyed. The question of whether a sitting took place on that day has already been addressed. I am not convinced that there was no sitting on June 26, 2025,” Sifuna stated.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo further seconding his colleagues calling on adherence to the constitution, on matters of removal from office for governors.
In a contrary opinion UDA Senator and Majority Leader in the Senate Aaron Cheuiyot lamented over what he termed as premature termination of the impeachment proceedings.
Cheruiyot called on senators to allow the full process, which he said the Senate would have delivered justice for the people of Isiolo, as the allegations had been clearly elaborated by the County Assembly.
“There are serious allegations that must be addressed. I will propose that we amend our Standing Order to ensure future impeachment processes do not end prematurely,” Cheruiyot remarked.
Guyo’s survival comes as leaders, elders and people from Isiolo accused him of destroying the political goodwill of the county, and parading the county from goons they alleged he ferried from Nairobi.
