Isiolo South Legislator Mohamed Tubi has defended the members of the Isiolo County Assembly (MCAs), after they voted to impeach Governor Abdi Guyo over abuse of office and mismanagement of public funds.
In a press release, Tubi stated that the impeachment of governors should not be criminalized, as it is a process clearly outlined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, in Article 181 of the County Assembly Acts. He further faulted the ongoing mayhem in the county labelling MCAs as troublemakers, while exercising their oversight duty and democratic right.
“Democracy is not a crime, impeachment is not treason, and MCAs are not criminals. This a process clearly enshrined in the Constitution of the country. ,” the legislator asserted.
Tubi remarks coming amid impeachment of Governor Guyo, who is set to appear before the Senate Plenary on Tuesday and Wednesday, to defend himself over the allegations raised by MCAs, including violation of the Leadership and Integrity Act by Guyo.
“Oversight and checks and balances are the pillars of governance. We must protect our democracy, not punish it,” he urged.
He called on respect for constitutional processes, and cautioned against intimidation of elected leaders who are performing their duties. Earlier the MCAs had raised alarm over intimidation and attacks aimed at them, which they linked involvement of Guyo.
Tubi’s remarks are seen as a direct call to county executive to uphold the rule of law and allow MCAs to operate without fear ,intimidation or interference.
On Friday, elders drawn from Isiolo, Marsabit and Tana river counties accused the governor for ferrying goons from Nairobi who have caused disruption in the functioning of the county, and further urging the Senate to impeach him, as he is destroying the political goodwill of Isiolo.
“In Isiolo we are under intimidation, as Governor has ferried goons from Nairobi, sasa akileta wakora hapa, Isiolo itakuwa yetu ama ya watu wa Nairobi? ” Balozi Kalapata said.
