DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala's driver allegedly assaulted by police in Kakamega after failing to track him on the vehicle.
Democratic Citizen’s Party (DCP) Deputy Party leader Cleophas Malala has decried brutality and harassment meted on his driver by police officers in Kakamega County.
According to a Facebook post made by Malala, Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), he identified as Mr. Rotich was trailing his vehicle, which was being driven by his driver, after missing out on him they brutally picked on the driver.
Malala stated that the officer with three other officers in plain clothes forcefully removed his driver from the car, took him to unknown place and assaulted him using a gun pointer, leaving the driver with injuries.
“The Kakamega OCPD a one MR. ROTICH and three other uniformed officers trailed my vehicle and forced my driver to stop. Disappointingly, upon confirming I was not on board, they commanded him to drive to an unknown destination. When he refused, they assaulted him so severely using a gun pointer that he was left profusely bleeding,” Malala stated.
Malala further claimed the officers denied his driver pleas to seek medical attention despite his injuries bleeding, they booked him at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours, before escorting him to the Kakamega General Hospital.
Additionally, he said that the officers tried to confiscated the driver’s phone in the quest to hide evidence of their unlawful acts against innocent and unarmed Kenyan.
“Instead of permitting medical aid, they detained him at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours. Only after this unlawful detention was he escorted by armed officers to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment. Shockingly, they attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on his phone a crude attempt to conceal their actions to no avail of success,” Malala further claimed.
He faulted the institution mandated to protect Kenyans, using their powers to harass Kenyans, saying that they will not be intimidated, and the case will be filed with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), for further investigations into the assault.
“This is unconscionable brutality by those sworn to protect us. Our nation sinks deeper into lawlessness when officers become perpetrators. We will not be intimidated! We are formally filing a complaint with IPOA (Independent Policing Oversight Authority),” he stated.
The assault comes when the country is mourning the death of X blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang’, who was picked from his home in Migori County and died few hours after his arrest at Central Police Station in Nairobi.
