Dagoretti North Constituency legislator Beatrice Elachi has received backlash from Kenyans following her prayer point during the National Prayer Breakfast held in Nairobi at Safari Park Hotel on Wednesday, May 28.
During her prayer, Elachi said that social media has become toxic among the youths leaving them helpless, and asked God to forgive the youths, and as well help the members of parliament to deal with the issue.
“Our youth are hopeless, and we pray that the spirit of social media running our country is dealt with. May we stand for what is best for our nation and future generations. We want to confess, as legislators, that we must indeed address that sector. We shall have the courage to stand and believe in what is good for our country. Father, forgive us,” Elachi said.
The remarks seemingly not seating well with Kenyans, who asked her not to talk about social media, as the platform has done much than the Kenya Kwanza government has done for the people. He urged the leaders to work for Kenyans and stop blaming social media.
“Social Media has created more employment for the youth than the government, stop blaming it every time smh 🙄,” a netizen wrote.
“Social media wasn’t invented in 2022; it’s not a new phenomenon. It existed before and will continue to exist. If you were doing what you were elected to do, instead of running the government like a criminal syndicate, we’d be posting memes every day. 🤷 We don’t love politics,” another netizen said.
“Beatrice Elachi, it’s a disgrace that you prioritize praying for social media over addressing the deeply entrenched corruption in Kenya. You are a political opportunist,” said a netizen.
The National Prayer Breakfast conducted under the theme “Rise and rebuild”, which was introduced by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula also emphasized that this year’s theme calls on Kenyans to awaken, as well leaders.
“The National Prayer Breakfast has evolved into more than just an annual tradition. This year’s prayer breakfast, themed ‘Rise and Rebuild,’ calls upon all of us, as both leaders and citizens, to awaken,” Wetang’ula said.
President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and their spouses graced the event that brough leaders from all political divide to pray for the nation.
