On Thursday, comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi visited the family of Millicent Maina, in Githurai 44 one the saddest visit he said he has made.
Millicent a mother of two boys aged 11-years and 7-years is confined in her bed, depending on oxygen supply and care from her 11-year old son. The son jangling between school, watching over his ailing mother and little brother in their house.
In a shared video by Dorea Chege and the comedian, the shows not only a sad anguishing state of the family, struggling to get her well and the challenge of her children nursing their sole bread winner, but also the disappointing failure by the systems in the country, worse to it is the critical health sector.
Omondi calling on support from Kenyans, depicted a picture of how the son changing his mother’s diaper is not only mentally challenging but culturally wrong.
“This is the saddest thing I’ve seen this year and trust me, I’ve seen things this year. This mother is in utter pain and she is being taken care by her 11 year-old son. This boy should not be changing his mother’s diapers, it is just wrong mentally, culturally and even psychologically. The systems have failed us. Today I sleep a very angry Kenyan but I know tomorrow is a better day. Our priority as a nation are surely upside down,” he wrote.
Emotionally moved by the sad and mentally disturbing situation Kenyans came out in large numbers, not only contributing and wishing the family well, but expressed their disappointment on the state of expensive health care in the country.

Despite the government calls and gospel of government health insurance Social Health Authority (SHA) working effectively, it is clear that many Kenyans continue to suffer in accessing quality healthcare, as promised by Kenya Kwanza government during campaigns, the promise has not been actualized.
