Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs to President William Ruto Prof. Makau Mutua has called for the ban of boda bodas in major cities and towns across the country.
According to Mutua, it unacceptable to allow the sector to operate in the country, as they are filled with chaos, illegalities and tainted negatively following their conducts on the road with massive disregard of the traffic rules.
“I am convinced that ALL boda boda should be banned from the streets of ALL Kenya’s major cities and towns. No modern city should tolerate such chaos, illegality, terrible aesthetics, and indiscipline on its roads. Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!!” Mutua stated.
His remarks coming almost a year when Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen faulted the sector for propagating all forms of ill in the society, which brough fierce response from the sector, terming Murkomen’s remarks as misguided and uninformed.
His remarks receiving mixed reaction from Kenyans, with some being irked with his sentiments, others supporting him, while another section asking him to present solutions after the ban.
“Calling for a total ban on all boda bodas overlooks the critical role they play in our economy. This sector is one of the largest sources of employment in Kenya, supporting millions of youths and their families. Instead of banning them, let’s push for better regulation, proper training, and strict enforcement of traffic laws,” Samwel Weksa stated.
“You can’t legislate away economic problems. Banning boda bodas from our roads won’t solve the deeper issues — in fact, it risks creating even greater chaos. Let’s address the root causes, not just the symptoms,”Kayta Natures said.
“I actually fully support this, coincidentally majority of that chaos is fueled by riders from Luo Nyanza anyway. But let’s be honest, I doubt Baba would ever back this kind of order. His political base strongly lacks discipline; disorder is their brand!” George Njoroge wrote.
“I am convinced that educated fools like you should be banned from opening their mouths,” African Mogul commented.
“I have been wondering if we have laws in our country for these riders. Our parliamentarians are simply sleeping on their jobs completely,” Krak added.
“In Nairobi when crossing roads you’ll have to be careful to avoid being hit by a boda guy on the wrong lane, such a struggle,” Joji wrote.
“Create jobs for those young people first,” Miato added.
In his campaigns, Ruto promised to support the sector, with the calls from his advisor a clear testament of betrayal from the sector to the young people who depend on the sector to fend for themselves and their families.
Additionally, the contribution of the sector in creating immediate job opportunities and growth of the economy cannot be ignored, with the ban threatening the open employment space for you
